The Historic Town of Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina

submitted on 21 July 2023 by travellistings.org

Beholding the Beauty of the Old Bridge

As I sauntered into the historic town of Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina, an unexpected gust of wind slapped me in the face, as if to declare, "Welcome, weary traveler, to a place where history and culture collide like a cacophony of metaphysical bumper cars!" And so I entered the town, my senses braced for the inevitable sensory assault. The first thing that took my breath away was the Stari Most, or the Old Bridge, a 16th-century Ottoman construction that seems to defy gravity as it swoops majestically across the Neretva River. It was destroyed during the 1990s conflict but has since been resurrected, much like a phoenix from the ashes, or a particularly resilient cockroach.

Meandering Through the Cobbled Streets

Mostar's cobbled streets are a veritable treasure trove of architectural delights, each one daring the unsuspecting sojourner to trip, stumble and plummet face-first into the ancient stonework. The variety of architectural styles on display is a testament to the town's historical significance and its resilience in the face of adversity. Mosques rub shoulders with Franciscan churches, while the occasional Communist-era apartment block looms overhead like a metaphorical reminder of the past.

Delving into the Depths of the Bazaar

The bazaar in Mostar is a labyrinthine wonderland, teeming with life at every twist and turn. Vendors hawk their wares with wild abandon, their cries filling the air like a symphony of solicitation. I weaved my way through the thronging mass of humanity, feeling the press of bodies on all sides, like a lone sardine swimming upstream against a torrent of ungainly salmon. It was here that I discovered a stall selling the most intricate metalwork I had ever seen, reminiscent of a Victorian steampunk fever dream. It was run by a man with hands like gnarled oak branches, his face a tapestry of wrinkles and age, yet his eyes sparkled with the mischievous glint of a toddler who has just discovered the taste of dirt.

Mostar's Eclectic Art Scene

It would be remiss of me not to mention Mostar's burgeoning and eclectic art scene, which seems to flourish in spite of, or perhaps because of, the scars of the city's tumultuous past. The town boasts a bevvy of galleries and street art installations, each more thought-provoking and visually arresting than the last. I was particularly struck by one piece that had been painted onto the side of a decaying building; it depicted a man with a fish for a head, riding a bicycle powered by smaller fish, each with their own tiny bicycles. The meaning of this piece eluded me, but it left a lasting impression on my already overstimulated psyche.

A Sojourn to the Sniper Tower

No visit to Mostar would be complete without a pilgrimage to the infamous Sniper Tower, a somber reminder of the city's recent history. This dilapidated skyscraper was once the tallest building in Mostar, its vantage points used by snipers during the Yugoslav Wars. Its shattered windows gape like the empty eyes of a long-dead beast, each pane a haunting testament to the horrors of war. As I ascended the crumbling stairwell, my footsteps echoed through the hollow chambers, a chilling reminder of the ephemeral nature of human existence.

Reflections on the Trip

As I left Mostar, its cobbled streets fading into the distance like the memory of a particularly vivid fever dream, I couldn't help but feel a sense of loss. This ancient town, with its amalgamation of cultures, its scars and its beauty, had wormed its way into the very fabric of my being. I knew that I would never forget Mostar, and it would never forget me. And in that moment, as the sun dipped below the horizon and the sky was painted in hues of gold, pink, and lavender, I was struck by a single, profound thought: "I really should have tried that ćevapi."
