Strolling Through the Historic Lanes of Estonia's Tallinn

submitted on 11 August 2023 by travellistings.org

A Chronicle of Cobblestones and Charm

Would you like to stroll through a place that looks like it came straight out of a fairy tale? Well, look no further, for I have just the place for you - Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. A city so old, it could have been designed by Hans Christian Andersen himself, or perhaps by the lovechild of J.R.R. Tolkien and a medieval architect, if ever there was such a union. Now, you may be thinking, "Estonia? That's one of those tiny European countries that I can't quite place on a map, right?" And you'd be correct - Estonia is one of those delightfully small countries in Northern Europe, neatly tucked between Latvia, Russia, and the Baltic Sea. But don't let its size fool you; Tallinn is a treasure trove of medieval charm and history, just waiting for you to come and explore its cobbled streets and ancient walls.

A Step Back in Time: The Old Town

Let's begin our stroll through Tallinn's Old Town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for good reason. It's one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe and walking through its narrow streets truly feels like stepping back in time.First off, we'll head to the Town Hall Square, the heart of the Old Town. Here, you'll find the charming Town Hall itself, which has been standing proudly since the 13th century and is now home to the Tallinn City Museum. In the square, you'll also find the oldest continuously operating pharmacy in Europe - the Raeapteek. Established in 1422, it's now part museum and part functioning pharmacy, so you can take a gander at some ancient remedies while picking up a packet of Band-Aids for those cobblestone-induced blisters. Now, let's wander through the maze of narrow alleyways, each with its own story to tell. One particular favorite of mine is St. Catherine's Passage, which is not only an Instagrammer's dream but also home to the St. Catherine's Guild. Here, you can watch artisans at work, crafting everything from ceramics to glassware, in what is essentially a medieval workshop with a hipster twist.

Soaring High: Toompea Hill

As we continue our stroll, we'll find ourselves climbing up Toompea Hill, where you'll be rewarded with a stunning view of the Old Town's red rooftops and church spires. Here, you'll also encounter the grand Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, which looks like it was plucked straight out of Russia and plopped down in Tallinn, causing a slight architectural culture shock. But that's just part of Tallinn's charm - its eclectic mix of architectural styles, a testament to its varied history and influences. While you're up on Toompea Hill, don't miss the chance to visit the oldest part of Tallinn, the Dome Church (also known as St. Mary's Cathedral). The church dates back to the 13th century and has withstood the test of time, just like the rest of the city. It now serves as the final resting place for numerous notable Estonians, so take a moment to pay your respects before continuing your jaunt through history.

Defending the City: Tallinn's Walls and Towers

Now, you can't explore a medieval city without admiring its walls and towers, and Tallinn has some of the most impressive ones around. The city walls, which once encompassed the entire city, now only partially remain, but they're still an imposing sight to behold. You can even climb up some of the towers for a bird's-eye view of the city and to experience what it must have been like to be a medieval guard, keeping a watchful eye out for invaders, or perhaps just playing a rousing game of "I Spy."One such tower you can climb is the Kiek in de Kök, which, despite its unfortunate-sounding name, is actually a fascinating museum that showcases the history of Tallinn's fortifications. Should you muster the courage to ascend its spiral staircase, you'll be treated not only to an impressive view but also to a greater understanding of the city's past.

A Well-Deserved Rest: The Olde Hansa

Phew! After all that exploring, I think it's about time we take a break and refuel. And what better way to do so than by dining like a true medieval noble at the Olde Hansa? This delightful restaurant, located not far from the Town Hall Square, is a veritable feast for the senses, from the candlelit ambiance to the hearty dishes prepared using authentic medieval recipes. As you tuck into a plate of wild boar or elk, you might just find yourself transported back in time, imagining what life must have been like for the people who once walked these very streets. So, there you have it - a whimsical stroll through the historic lanes of Estonia's Tallinn, a city that proves that good things truly do come in small packages. I hope you enjoyed our jaunt through time and that you're inspired to embark on your own adventure through this enchanting place.
